From Androgynous Style to Freedom with Riana
The fashion industry is constantly evolving, with a growing focus on diversity and inclusivity. Riana, one of my androgynous models with tan skin and brown features, is at the forefront of this shift. With her unique style and commitment to breaking barriers, she’s challenging traditional beauty standards and redefining what it means to be a model. We’ve had some great conversations about her journey in fashion, and here’s a look into her experiences and perspectives on the future of the industry.
How did your journey into modeling start? Was it something you always envisioned, or did it come as a surprise?
I began my modeling journey at the Nylon Face Off 2011 festival. Originally from Bandung, I later moved to Bali to further pursue my modeling career. When I first started modeling, it was tough. My androgynous look, tan skin, and tattoos made it hard to fit into the conventional mold. But things really began to change when I moved to Bali.
The beauty standards there are much more relaxed and diverse, which gave me the freedom to embrace my uniqueness. My journey in Bali took an unexpected turn when I randomly bumped into a talent scout on a beach. With my long black hair and distinct Asian features, I started getting more opportunities, especially for projects looking for Asian models. That was the turning point that helped my career take off.
What was your first impression of Mark Baigent’s brand, and how did you feel when you were chosen to represent an avant-garde and gender-neutral label?
I got to know Mark through social media, just chatting here and there. They mentioned they were launching their product and asked if I would be interested. And of course, I said yes, which led to me becoming Mark’s model. We’ve already done three photoshoots together, with the first one back in 2018. Before our first shoot, Mark asked if I’d be open to modeling for their gender-neutral clothing line.
Their designs prioritize a gender-neutral label, so they’re made to be worn by anyone. The pieces showcase both masculine and feminine sides, breaking away from the "taboo" and letting people express themselves freely. Plus, Mark's customer base extends beyond Indonesia to an international audience, which gives the designs a broader, global appeal
Mark Baigent emphasizes sustainability and ethical fashion. How does being part of this vision resonate with your personal values??
At first, I wasn’t fully aligned with Mark’s values because I wasn’t sure how their vision fit with my own. I knew their designs were unique, but I wasn’t certain they reflected my personal journey or style. However, as I became more involved, I started to see how their work allowed me to express myself freely, without being confined by labels or expectations. Their pieces gave me the freedom to blend both masculine and feminine elements in one look, which felt empowering and authentic. It wasn’t just about fashion, it became about embracing all sides of my identity without limitations.
Mark Baigent’s market isn’t about fitting into traditional beauty standards. It’s for everyone, regardless of gender, age, or how society defines beauty. Their products are for anyone who wants to wear them, whether you’re considered conventionally beautiful or not. That inclusivity resonated with me deeply, and I realized their vision was more than just about clothing. It was about celebrating individuality and allowing people to express their true selves, no matter their background or appearance.
Can you share a memorable moment from a photoshoot or runway show for Mark Baigent? What sets these experiences apart from others in your career?
The second photoshoot with Mark Baigent in 2020 was booming. I could finally express my own identity fully. At that time, I wore a blazer and long gloves, trying on the pieces several times to ensure they fit both the model and the vision behind Mark Baigent. I felt honored because Mark appreciated me not just as a model, but as a human being, and gave me the opportunity to shine in a way that felt true to myself. I posted the project on Mark Baigent’s platform, and soon after, I started receiving feedback on social media. This exposure helped me get noticed, and before I knew it, I was invited to collaborate with others. It was one of the most unforgettable experiences for me.
What’s your favorite Mark Baigent piece, and why does it stand out for you?
Albatross Dress Sheer Long Batik is my pick from Mark Baigent’s collection! Mark Baigent was so kind. After the photoshoot, I received one or two dresses. At first, Mark Baigent’s pieces didn’t quite match my style, but the Albatros Dress Sheer Long Batik really caught my attention.
The sheer fabric fits my body perfectly, and I love how the slits at the bottom of the dress on both sides give it an elegant yet bold touch. That dress makes me feel sexy and extraordinary. Plus, when I wore it one night in Bali, I received so many compliments from my friends. They couldn’t stop asking where I got it, and I felt incredibly confident and beautiful, which made the whole experience even more special.
