Fair Trade Clothing as a Key Part of Sustainable Fashion
In a time when economic inequality is widespread, fair trade seems to be promoting the idea of equality and fairness in the international market. So, what is fair trade?
Fair Trade is a way to help people in developing countries by providing a stable and safe work environment and supporting individuals by giving them the means to obtain and sustain a better quality of life. It's about talking openly, being clear, and treating each other with respect and dignity within the workplace. In international trade, Fair Trade organisations make significant efforts to assist producers or workers, increase awareness for the issues of marginalised communities, and advocate for better regulations by educating the buyers and encouraging them to be part of the solution that Fair Trade aims for, equality in the workforce.
Mark Baigent has decided to tackle this issue by creating gender nonconform garments and additionally using this creative outlet to spread the message of fair trade.
What Is Fair Trade Clothing?
Fair trade clothing is clothes made according to the 10 fair trade principles (https://wfto-asia.com/credibility/charter-of-fair-trade-principles/) and the fair rules for trading. In the global market system known as "free trade", those with the most power often win. This rule has brought many good changes that help many people. But it also harms factory workers and those involved in clothing production (SIMONČIČ, 2021).
Fairtrade regulations aim to address inequalities in power dynamics by establishing guidelines for clothing production. These guidelines are stricter than usual free trade regulations. In some cases, fair trade principles can be in harmony with other beneficial business ideas, such as promoting environmental protection during clothing production, using sustainable materials like organic cotton, and ensuring that workers have access to essential provisions, such as healthcare, safety measures, and fair compensation.
What is the role of Fair Trade in the Fashion Industry?
As mentioned above, the fair trade objective is to achieve sustainable society and the environment in their production. Therefore, the goal is to make sure everyone gets treated fairly, gets paid enough, and works in good conditions. Fair trade also aims to make communities where clothes are made better while being transparent.
In some countries where products are manufactured, there is a misconception that garment workers benefit from favourable conditions. That couldn't be further from the truth. Most garment workers don't get paid enough, don't have proper work contracts, and face harsh working conditions. These phenomena show why fair and ethical trading is important for the developing world.
Keeping this idea in mind, the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) has set out 10 rules for businesses that are part of it. These rules guide how these companies should work every day. The WFTO also wants more businesses to join so that together they can make a better standard around the world.
